The ESTA is not compulsory if you are a national of a country participating in the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) and you are entering the United States by land from Canada.
To prepare for your future trip to the United States, it's important to find out about the ESTA, an electronic travel authorisation that allows you to enter the United States. If you are arriving by car, bus, boat or plane, it is usually compulsory to complete this procedure before your departure.
If your nationality is covered by the Visa Waiver Program, you can apply for ESTA. Most European nationals are eligible for this programme and can apply for an electronic travel authorisation. In this case, you can contact an embassy to apply for a visa. You can find out whether you are eligible by consulting our page https://www.esta.us.org/vwp/.
If you are entering the United States via a land, sea or air borderThe ESTA is eligible at all points of entry. The airline or shipping company may ask you for your document before you board. The ESTA can therefore be used for a cruise or if you are travelling to Canada and then to the United States. Note that all entry is controlled by US immigration.
It should also be noted that an ESTA application is compulsory if you are arriving from Canada and Mexico by land, sea or air.
⚠️ From 2 May 2022, the I-94W form will be replaced by the ESTA electronic authorisation.
